26 new flu deaths reported in North Carolina
Health officials say there were more than two dozen new deaths last week, bringing the total to 90 for this flu season

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- The flu is at epidemic levels in the state and the number of the people dying from flu-related illness continues to rise.

Influenza killed 26 more people in a week's time span. That brings the death toll to 90 since the season started in October.

This year's flu strain has been aggressive and intense. Clinics and hospitals continue to see people coming through with classic symptoms: fever, chills, headaches, sore throat, and cough.

Some medical professionals tell ABC11 they've been busy, but thankfully not bombarded like in weeks past.

"We are hopeful that this week's report represents a peak in the season and that as flu surveillance activity starts decreasing, so do the flu deaths," said DHHS Medical Epidemiologist Dr. Zack Moore.

According to the state's latest report, there has been a decrease in the number of people visiting hospitals and clinics.

"Yearly flu vaccination remains the first and most important step in protecting against the flu," said Moore. "Even with decreased protection, as was the case this year, the vaccine reduces severe outcomes such as hospitalization and death."

Experts are urging people to notify their doctor immediately and start anti-viral drugs at the earliest onset of flu-like symptoms.

"Whatever anti-viral medicine that we recommend is best within the first 48 hours. It has the most efficiency," said Urgent Care Physician's Assistant Candice Hesse.
