FAYETTEVILLE, NC (WTVD) -- Senator Kay Hagan (D-NC) met with senior officials and staff at the Fayetteville VA Medical Center Monday to get an update on shortening the wait times for veterans seeking medical care at the facility.

The meeting came after acting Veterans Affairs Secretary Sloan Gibson visited the center earlier this month.

Hagan urged Gibson to come to North Carolina after a recent report showed the facility had some of the longest wait times for veterans to see a primary care doctor. Gibson pledged to spend $7m to improve health care by adding additional space, expanding clinic hours, and retaining doctors through bonuses.

"It's important for me to hear directly from staff at the Fayetteville VAMC about the problems they are facing and get a status update on what corrective actions are being taken," said Hagan in a news release.

Hagan's meeting Monday was closed to the media and she did not speak to reporters afterwards - citing the need to catch a flight back to Washington. She does plan to meet with reporters Tuesday.
