Orange County deputies were out in Efland Tuesday, stopping drivers and passing out flyers.

The deputies were looking for any information that might lead to an arrest after a 22-year-old man was found shot and killed near an elementary school.

Tevin Kendrick, of Durham, died Monday afternoon. His body was discovered in the parking lot of Efland-Cheeks Community Center, which is about a hundred yards away from Efland-Cheeks Elementary School.

Sheriff Charles Blackwood said Kendrick was found lying dead behind a white Nissan with multiple gunshot wounds on his torso.

Folks who live nearby heard the gunshots in rapid succession around 2:30 p.m.

"We [first] heard three shots," said eyewitness Herbert McAdoo. "[Then] four or five more shots went off."

Authorities believe Kendrick, who had a criminal history, was targeted.

"This investigation is ongoing and it's too early to draw any conclusions about what happened or who may be responsible," said Sheriff Blackwood.

Some deputies were stationed at Efland-Cheeks Elementary School Tuesday as a safety precaution.

"We don't feel there is an immediate concern for the residents of the community, the community center or the school. We had a few additional deputies at the school this morning and everything went very well there," said Sheriff Blackwood.
