How to Create Invisible Soda

Milk is a kitchen necessity! It pairs well with cereal and is a vital ingredient to many baking recipes. In this experiment, however, we're examining one substance it doesn't particularly agree with - and why. Follow along with ABC11 Science Club with BASF and discover how to create invisible soda at home.

Objective: To learn more about observable states of matter and chemical reactions.

Why does the soda turn clear when you add milk? The separation occurs due to a chemical reaction between the soda's phosphoric acid and milk.

Phosphoric acid molecules attach to the molecules of milk, increasing the density and thus separating them from the rest of the liquid. The remaining liquids, having less density than the phosphoric acid and milk molecules, floats on top.
