Durham police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened early Sunday morning on Holloway Street

DURHAM (WTVD) -- Durham police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened early Sunday morning on Holloway Street.

Police said 22-year-old Jonathan McClain was driving down Holloway Street near Rochelle Street around 2:45 a.m. when several shots were fired at his vehicle from another vehicle.

McClain was shot and pronounced dead at the scene. Two other men in his vehicle were also shot and taken to the hospital with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Neighbors said McClain was gunned down about a half-mile from where he lived. He was reportedly returning home from a night out with friends.

Jontae Dunston said he knew McClain. He heard the gunshots on Sunday morning.

"Johnny out of all people. It's devastating us right now. We don't understand why this happened to him," said Dunston. "It's hard for being a father to see these young boys growing to become men and then all of a sudden they're cut down."

The shooting is even more upsetting for Dunston, because he's the Block Captain for the Neighborhood Watch. Dunston spends a lot of his time meeting with residents and mentoring youths. He said he would like to help investigators in any way possible.

According to investigators, the incident did not appear to be random. No descriptions of the suspects or the vehicles involved are available at this time.

No charges have been filed.

"The young man that was killed, he was never involved in any activity. He was one of the best pillars of our community. He was one of the boys that had a bright future," Dunston said. "Right now, my heart goes out to his family."
