DURHAM (WTVD) -- NCCU police say 22-year-old James Henry Nelson IV - wanted for allegedly hitting an officer with his car last week - surrendered Tuesday at the Durham Police Department.

Bond was set at $275,000.

The incident started last Wednesday night when two NCCU police officers went to a residence hall for a safety discussion and spotted an illegally parked vehicle near Lawson Street and Alston Avenue.

When they asked the driver for identification, authorities said Nelson became uncooperative, and then drove off, hitting one of the officers.

The injured officer then fired his gun at the fleeing white Dodge Charger.

When Durham police arrived to assist the NCCU officers, a police cruiser was hit by on-coming traffic.

Both the NCCU officer and a Durham police officer were taken to the hospital with injuries.

Nelson is charged with assault with a deadly weapon. School officials say he is not an NCCU student.
