Wife facing charges in husband's stabbing death at Granville County home
According to the sheriff, a husband and wife were having an argument when the wife, Rotonya Russell, stabbed Carlos Russell in the neck.

OXFORD, N.C. (WTVD) -- Authorities are investigating a murder following a domestic situation in Granville County.

Granville County Sheriff Brindell B. Wilkins, Jr. told ABC11 that deputies were called to a home in the 4200 block of Belltown Road, which is about four miles south of Oxford, around 2:30 a.m. after a reported stabbing.

According to the sheriff, a husband and wife were having an argument when the wife, 40-year-old Rotonya Russell, stabbed 35-year-old Carlos Russell in the neck. The victim was taken to Granville Medical Center where he was declared dead.

Neighbor Pamela Lester, who's known the couple for more than 20 years, said she was surprised to hear about what had happen.

"I've talked to her and I've spoken to them, and I'm just sad," she said.

"Little domestic stuff was going on, but not this bad. Not to go this far, yeah," Lester said when asked if she saw any signs of violence before Wednesday's incident.

Authorities said they had been called to the home quite a few times in the past.

According to the sheriff, the couple's 15-year-old daughter was home at the time of the assault, watched her mother stab her father and called 911 for help.

She was not the only child living with the couple, according to Lester.

"They've got older kids, but a lot of them are small," she said. "And not to have a mama and a daddy here is a hard thing. So my prayers go out to the kids."

Rotonya Russell has since been charged with second-degree murder.

She is currently being held at the Granville County Jail under a $100,000 bond. Her court date has been set for June 23.
