Woman shot at Sanford courthouse; ex-husband arrested

Steven Douglas Burch was arrested.

SANFORD (WTVD) -- A man is in custody after Sanford Police say he shot his estranged wife on Wednesday in the parking lot of the Lee County Courthouse.

Steven Douglas Burch, 28, of the 2300 block of Woodland Avenue in Sanford, was arrested and charged with one count of assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill inflicting serious injury, two counts of first-degree kidnapping, one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and one count of felony violation of domestic protective order involving a firearm.

The shooting happened shortly before noon. Officers who responded found Katti Marie Sheffield, 35, with a gunshot wound to her back.

Sheffield told officers that she had been shot by her estranged husband. Burch was later taken into custody without incident behind Adcock Rentals, at 1111 S. Horner Blvd. in Sanford.

Sheffield was taken to Central Carolina Hospital. She was then taken by life flight to UNC Hospitals where she is described as stable.

Burch is being held in Lee County Jail under no bond. His first court appearance is set for Thursday.
