Cubs fill need, add Mariners lefty reliever Mike Montgomery, source says

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs acquired Seattle Mariners lefty Mike Montgomery on Wednesday along with Triple-A pitcher Jordan Pries for Triple-A slugger Dan Vogelbach and Double-A pitcher Paul Blackburn, according to a source familiar with the deal.

Montgomery, 27, immediately fills a need for the Cubs, as they've been lacking a lefty reliever. Montgomery has also started two games this season and 18 in his two-year career.

Lefties are hitting .164 off him in 2016. He has a 2.34 ERA in 32 games, 30 in relief.

Vogelbach was being blocked at the big league level by Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo. His body type, 6-foot, 250 pounds, doesn't allow for another position other than designated hitter.

Pries, 26, had a 7-3 record with a 4.93 ERA combined between Double-A and Triple-A for the Mariners, while Blackburn was 6-4 with a 3.17 ERA at Double-A Tennessee for the Cubs.

The deal will be official at the conclusion of Wednesday's game between the Mariners and Chicago White Sox.
