BASF Science Club: Bees and Pollination

BASF employee, Stephanie Darnell, is a Technical Product Stewardship Manager and a beekeeper! She shows the inside of a hive and shares some facts about bees:

- Honey bees are a major pollinator for crops

- 30,000-60,000 bees in a hive

- They fly 1-5 miles away to find resources

- Each box in a beehive is called a Super

- Honey never spoils

- The workers are all females

- Each hive has just one queen

- The queen lays around 1,000 eggs per day

- The bees help feed, groom, and take care of the queen

- Bees can sting you, but they are just interested in finding food

- Pollen sticks to bees, so as they move from plant to plant they spread the pollen
