Raleigh (WTVD) -- American Idol winner Scotty McCreery and friends were the victims of a home invasion style robbery in the 2100 block of Raleigh's Wolf Tech Lane just before 2 a.m. Monday.

The area is an apartment complex near the NC State campus and McCreery is a student at the university.

According to Raleigh police, three armed people came into the home and took wallets, cash, and electronic items before fleeing.

No one was hurt.

Neighbors who spoke with ABC11 described hearing a group of people charging up the stairs.

"All you heard was yelling like 'Who are you? What are you doing here?' for a good five minutes. It was just yelling," said one neighbor.

The woman said the next thing she heard was people running down the stairs again and soon afterwards police arrived.

"We just thought it was a bunch of college students partying until that point," said the woman.

The front door of the apartment was covered in police fingerprinting dust Monday. Investigators said they were working to put together descriptions of the suspects.

McCreery put out a statement on Twitter:

"Yes, it was definitely a very scary night. Luckily me friends and I are safe and the Raleigh PD is on the case. I will share more when the time is right, but as of now we do not want to do or say anything that could hinder the investigation. Thanks to everyone for their prayers and support. A huge thank you to the Raleigh PD for their quick response and hard work in solving this case."

McCreery - a native of Garner, North Carolina - burst onto the national stage in 2011 when he won the tenth season of American Idol.

The country music singer has since released three albums, all of which have been top sellers.

He is finishing up his sophomore year at NC State.
