RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Disaster recovery centers are now open in Central Carolina to help storm victims recover from the destruction left by Tropical Storm Chantal.

Governor Stein has made a Type I Disaster Declaration, which covers Orange, Durham, Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, Granville, Person, and Wake Counties.

The State assessments found Chantal caused about $42 million worth of damage.

The declaration allows residents and business owners to access state funds to pay for a variety of needs as they rebuild.

"What that means is it provides disaster grant funding to disaster survivors to replace personal property for housing and rental assistance for medical assistance and treatment, and if needed, unfortunately, for funeral expenses," said North Carolina Emergency Management Spokesperson Justin Graney.

The US Small Business Administration also provided a declaration, which will allow people impacted and business owners to low interest loans to rebuild.
