EDGECOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- US-64 eastbound was closed Monday morning after a bus accident near mile marker 484 in Edgecombe County.
At around 6 a.m. a flatbed tractor trailer crashed into the rear of the passenger bus, causing it to overturn.
The tractor trailer veered to the right off the road and finally stopped in the woods.
Chopper 11 was overhead as authorities loaded multiple people into an ambulance.
26 workers were injured in the crash.
Highway patrol said that two people had serious injuries and were airlifted to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, N.C.
The driver of the tractor trailer, Aaron Nissim Moore, 31, was charged with failing to reduce speed to avoid a collision.
Authorities said he was driving around 65 mph when he hit the bus going about 45 mph.
The driver of the bus, Manuel Rodrigues, 29, was charged with failing to have a Class B driver's license.
There was heavy debris in the road including lumber from the tractor trailer.
The bus is an old school bus, no longer in service or affiliated with any school districts. It is used to transport construction workers in the area.
