FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- The fox that bit an 8-year-old student on Friday has tested positive for rabies.
The incident happened around 4 p.m. when officials said the fox jumped a fence at E.E. Miller Elementary School in Fayetteville.
No other children were attacked, and the child was taken to the hospital.
Animal control officers later captured the animal after it ran into a nearby wooded area.
On Saturday, the State Public Health Lab in Raleigh confirmed the fox tested positive for rabies.
Officials said the child has now started post-rabies exposure treatment.
The incident makes the fourth case of rabies reported in Cumberland County this year. Pet owners are urged to check the vaccination status of their pets and obtain a booster shot if necessary.
