Man found fatally shot in Johnston County
BENSON, N.C. (WTVD) -- Authorities in Johnston County are investigating a fatal shooting after a man was found lying in the middle of a road early Monday.
Police said 51-year-old James Smith Jr. was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest in the middle of Coats Circle in Benson just after midnight. Rescue crews were unable to revive him.
The investigation into Smith's death is on-going.
"Violent crimes are shocking to a community like Benson. The Benson Police Department responded immediately to the call and are working diligently to locate any and all parties involved in this case," said Chief Kenneth Edwards. "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim."
