Downtown Raleigh is hosting free outdoor movies this summer

Memorial Day Weekend kicks off a season of free outdoor movies in Raleigh and free concerts in Fayetteville.

The weekend is the unofficial start of summer and for several cities, it's also the start of a season of free events.

Raleigh will transform City Plaza into a giant outdoor free movie theater with the PNC Downtown Raleigh Movie Series. This is the second year for the event which has an 80's theme this year and the hashtag #flashbackfriday to the 80's.

The movies will be shown on a giant screen on the side of the BB&T building beginning at 6pm on May 22 with Ghostbusters and continue every Friday through June 26th.

Red Hat will be sponsoring 250 chairs for movie goers, but you are encouraged to bring your own blankets and lawn chairs.

Food trucks will also be on hand.

In Fayetteville's Festival Park, as part of the Dogwood Festival, the "Fayetteville After 5" concert series will begin on Friday, May 22 at 7pm with Heart and Motley Crue tribute band, Heart Brigade.

The free concerts will be held the fourth Friday of May, June, July, and August.

Gates to Festival Park open at 5pm. No outside food or beverages are allowed.
