25 years since WTVD crash
DURHAM -- Wednesday marks a sad anniversary for ABC11. It's been 25 years since we lost three team members in a helicopter crash.
On December 7, 1991, Chopper 11 went down returning from a high school football game in Wilmington.
Sports reporter Tony Debo was the only survivor. Photographer Bart Smith, 28; engineer Rick Sherill, 33; and pilot Jim Lane, 48; all died.
A scholarship to promote diversity at the UNC School of Journalism honors the memory of the three men.
