RALEIGH (WTVD) -- The PNC Arena in Raleigh is a focal point for many events and more people are starting to live in the area off Wade Avenue.
Now, a building for more potential businesses and housing is coming to the area.
On Thursday, an official groundbreaking for an environmentally friendly building was held near the arena, which opened up in 1999 as the "Raleigh Entertainment and Sports Arena" or "ESA" and was later renamed the "RBC Center," before the change to PNC Arena in 2011.
At the time, it was expected that residential and commercial development in the area would quickly follow, but that hasn't been the case - at least not until now.
"We haven't had a lot of spec office buildings going up in the area in quite some time. since probably 2008. so it's showing a changing of the guard," Developer Andy Andrews said.
A rendering of the new space has been revealed, showing what the four-story commercial building will look like.
Dominion Realty Partners says it will be called "Wade III" and will house several commercial businesses on the same side of Edward Mills Road as Cardinal Gibbons High School.
With construction now ready to get underway, the project should be completed within one year.
