5th Annual Ruler Day inspires others to find purpose

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- Family and friends gathered in Fayetteville to recognize the life and legacy of Darius 'DJ' Dawson, who died tragically in a car accident..

"He wanted to inspire others to tap into their God given talent and to rule their light no matter their subject area and whatever is going on in your life," said Roxie Dewitt Dawson.

Dawson read a proclamation about her son, Darius, who would've turned 37 on July 24.

"We have come together now and are trying to make sure that his legacy continues of wanting to serve people and help others," said Dawson.

That is what family and friends do every year since the tragic passing of DJ in September 2020.

Every July around his birthday, Ruler Day encourages everyone to reach for the skies and find purpose. DJ graduated from E.E. Smith High School and North Carolina A&T. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, and loved music and sports.

"The impact that he made on people just being selfless, not always thinking about themselves, you know, finding a way to impact, help somebody else," said Chaz Dawson, DJ's brother.

The 5th annual Ruler Day was a pop-up shop for small businesses in Fayetteville. Attendees enjoyed food, games, shopping, and hope.

However, the Dawson family realizes that grieving is a journey. Their family lost its eldest son, Erran, as well. Roxie told ABC11 News she found healing in writing a book, 'Chased by Trauma.'

"I do specifically tell people not to try to hide their grief, don't try to suppress it. Because if you're not grieving in a healthy way, that means you're turning to unhealthy ways, and that can make things worse. And so I tell people to find a way, find a way to release," said Roxie.

Proceeds from Ruler Day help fund the Darius Jay Dawson Memorial Endowment Fund, which will provide a scholarship for students at NC A&T.
