City of Rocky Mount lays off 100 employees due to financial crisis

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WTVD) -- The City of Rocky Mount has laid off 100 full-time employees after a review of the city's fiscal challenges.

The action is a direct response to the ongoing budget crisis, rising operational costs, and a critical need to realign resources, according to the city.

The city released the following statements on the layoffs:

"We deeply value the contributions of every employee affected by this decision. These individuals have served our community with commitment and professionalism, and we are profoundly grateful for their service.

While necessary, we understand this change brings real consequences to individuals, families, and teams, and we do not take this moment lightly.

We remain committed to transparency, fiscal responsibility, and above all, compassion, as we move forward. Our focus now is on stabilizing city operations, maintaining high-quality services for our residents, and supporting our workforce, both those who remain and those who are moving on."

City officials in Rocky Mount announced a sweeping financial recovery plan in late September after uncovering what they called a "serious financial crisis," - revealing that for more than two years, the city has spent millions more each month than it was bringing in.
