Man charged in Chapel Hill murder faces judge
HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- The first murder of the year in Chapel Hill is shrouded in mystery.
It was a case that started with a home invasion call, but by the time it all ended, one person was dead.
The unique thing about the case -- the victim did not live in the home.
The alleged gunman faced a judge Monday, where ABC11 learned the suspect apparently called 911 after the shooting.
It is a bit of a twist in a case that so far has investigators tight-lipped about what exactly happened last Friday when at least two schools were forced to go into lockdown.
Bartholomew Romidas Scott, 35, is charged with first-degree murder.
It is unclear if he lived in the home where the victim, 33-year-old Lew Hahn Hood, was found shot to death. Police say Hood was not a resident of the home either.
The motive is a mystery; even the district attorney confirmed Scott never had a serious criminal record until now.
"He does have a limited record. I think this case is going to prove to be a bit unusual. He did call 911. The victim shot multiple times. The defendant had a mask with him at that time," said Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall.
Scott remains in the Orange County Jail without bond.
