DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Durham County has withdrawn its sponsorship of the city's Pride event, citing concerns over federal executive orders that limit local government involvement in "diversity, equity, and inclusion activities."
Officials fear jeopardizing federal funding, which is critical for essential services. However, despite the decision, the county emphasized its support for the LGBTQ community.
"Durham County no longer sponsoring pride doesn't mean that Durham County doesn't care or love our LGBTQ community," Commission Chair Nida Allm told ABC11 Eyewitness News. "I personally and I know our entire board still stands strongly with the LGBT community. We're all personally going to be marching with the Pride parade."
The three-day event, organized by the LGBTQ Center of Durham, begins Friday and is expected to draw thousands of attendees.
