FedEx truck leaves highway and crashes in Knightdale

KNIGHTDALE, N.C. (WTVD) -- A FedEx truck driver is being treated for injuries after an early morning crash Wednesday.

The driver ran off I-540 and went down an embankment, and the truck burst into flames.

The crash happened in Knightdale on Lynnwood Road near Pine Acre Court.

A preliminary investigation showed the truck went off the road before reaching a bridge. Fire crews had difficulty putting out the flames due to so much diesel fuel being spilled during the crash.

ABC11's Jamiese Price said smoke could be seen miles from the scene.

The condition of the driver has not been released; however, emergency crews say the driver was outside of the truck when crews arrived.

Cleanup crews will likely be on the scene all day. Nothing is towable so trailers will need to be brought in to load up what's left. A hazmat crew will then need to clean up the area, also.

FedEx released the following statement:

"Safety is of the utmost importance to FedEx, and we would like to extend our appreciation to the first responders who assisted our team member following the accident. We are taking steps to recover and transport the affected packages as quickly as possible. Affected shippers will be notified about damaged packages, and customers with questions about their shipments can visit fedex.com ."
