ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Health officials have confirmed Alamance County's fourth rabies case of the year after a fox tested positive for the virus.

The fox was involved in an exposure incident near Garden Road and Peeler Street in Burlington on June 30. State laboratory testing later confirmed the animal had rabies.

The Alamance County Health Department said one person was exposed and has started post-exposure treatment.

Officials are urging residents in the area to use caution and monitor pets that may have been outdoors near the exposure site. Anyone who believes they or their pet may have been exposed should contact the Alamance County Health Department.

North Carolina law requires all dogs and cats to be vaccinated against rabies. Health officials also remind residents to seek immediate medical attention after any animal bite and avoid approaching wild animals.
