Runners tackle Krispy Kreme Challenge for charity

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- 2400 calories, a dozen donuts, 5 miles, and one hour.

Hundreds of people gathered at the NC State Memorial Belltower to run 2.5 miles to the Krispy Kreme at Peace and Person Streets, to then eat 12 donuts, and turn around and run back.

"It's not fun on the way back, that's for sure, it's donuts in the stomach that don't want to stay down there, that's for sure," one veteran runner told us.

His strategy: drink water while you're eating the donuts.

Others came along for moral support, and maybe a little gastronomic rescue.

"We're just going to keep an eye on him just in case I need to resuscitate him pump his stomach or something we're here for support," said Kendra Bland.

One by one, dodging the elements, and queasy stomachs to enjoy a sweet win at the finish line.

In the end, not just a rite of passage, but a good cause that sees 100% of the profits go to support the UNC Children's Hospital.
