ICE takes alleged gang member into custody in Mecklenburg County

CHAROTTE, N.C. (WTVD) -- U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has taken an alleged gang member into custody from the Mecklenburg County Jail, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies say ICE agents picked up Luis Marcano Marcano, who had been detained in the jail on local charges. Court documents identify Marcano Marcano as an alleged member of Tren de Aragua, a transnational criminal gang that originated in Venezuela. Authorities also say he has outstanding warrants in that country.

Marcano Marcano was previously charged in connection with a domestic incident involving his wife. According to an arrest affidavit, he was accused of firing a gun at his wife's feet during an argument. Investigators say that when she attempted to grab the firearm, it discharged.

The affidavit states the bullet struck the woman, who was seven months pregnant at the time, resulting in the death of her unborn child.

Despite the seriousness of the allegations, court records show Marcano Marcano was able to post bond on the local charges. However, he remained in custody due to an ICE detainer, which prompted his transfer to federal authorities.

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office confirmed ICE assumed custody following his release eligibility. It was not immediately clear where Marcano Marcano was transferred or what federal immigration proceedings he may face next.

ICE has not released additional details regarding the case, and no information has been provided about potential extradition related to the Venezuelan warrants.

Marcano Marcano has not been convicted of the charges. All allegations remain pending in court.
