CAMERON, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Tunnel to Towers Foundation is honoring the life and service of Army Maj. Alexander "Alex" Wingate by providing lasting support to his family following his death in the line of duty.
Maj. Wingate, a Special Operations soldier stationed at Fort Bragg, died in December 2024 as a result of a line-of-duty crash. He is survived by his wife, Corey, and their four children.
On Tuesday, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation announced it has paid off the mortgage on the Wingate family's home in Cameron, located in Moore County. The foundation's support ensures Corey Wingate and her children can remain in their home without the burden of monthly mortgage payments.
In a statement released by the family, Wingate's wife expressed gratitude for the foundation's assistance.
"I don't have to worry every month about keeping a roof over our heads, and that changes everything," she said. "It means we get to stay in our home, where my kids feel closest to their dad. That kind of security is something I wasn't sure we'd have, and now we do."
Maj. Wingate dedicated his life to military service. He spent three years serving as an infantry officer before being selected for Psychological Operations, a role in which he proudly served for 11 years.
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation honors the legacy of fallen service members who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Through its Gold Star Family Home Program, the organization provides mortgage-free homes to surviving spouses with young children, helping ensure long-term stability during a time of profound loss.
Foundation officials say Wingate's service and sacrifice exemplify the mission behind their work: to ensure the families of America's heroes are never forgotten.
