Procession honors fallen Highway Patrol Trooper Steven Perry

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- A solemn procession made its way through Durham Friday as law enforcement officers escorted the body of fallen North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Steven Perry.

Chopper 11 captured the emotional tribute from above as Trooper Perry's remains were transported from Fisher Memorial Funeral Parlor in Durham to Mitchell Funeral Home in Raleigh. Officers lined the route, standing in silent honor as the procession passed.

Trooper Perry, 30, was killed Sunday when a wrong-way driver collided headon with his patrol car on the Durham Freeway. The crash sparked an outpouring of grief from the community and from colleagues across the state.

A Durham native, Perry graduated from Riverside High School, where he was known for his athletic spirit and leadership. He later played football at North Carolina Central University before pursuing a career in law enforcement.

A funeral service to honor Trooper Perry's life and service is scheduled for next Wednesday at The Shepherd's Church in Cary.
