NC mother speaks out after she hired company with infected goats for kids' birthday party
STATESVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- A mother who hired a mobile petting zoo at the center of a rabies alert affecting baby goats spoke to ABC11.
The goats tested positive for the deadly disease after traveling to events in Durham and other counties across the state.
Aylin Cruz from Statesville says she hired Farm Adventures for her 9-year-old and 4-year-old's birthdays.
A few days after the party, Cruz says she received a call from the health department alerting her to possible rabies exposure.
State officials say four goats from Farm Adventures Mobile Petting Zoo were likely exposed by a skunk that went into the pen where they're kept.
The goats may have come into direct contact with people between July 28 and Aug. 27, raising concern about possible exposure.
The owner of the company says all her animals have gotten a rabies booster and so have the people who work at the farm.
Cruz is urging other people to do the same.
"I told her, for my peace of mind, and your peace of mind, go get vaccinated, and for any parent that has any question, I highly recommend them to go get vaccinated," she said.
State officials say there've been no human rabies cases in North Carolina since 2011.
They say if you think you've been exposed, contact your local county health department.
