RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Crews have started removing cooling towers and refrigeration units from the roof of the Raleigh Convention Center following a massive December fire.
They also must bring up a temporary cooling unit.
The work is taking place as events, large and small, are back on track.
Herb Atkin drove into Raleigh from Wilmington for a training class.
His event is one of many that were saved this month following the massive fire.
"Everybody was nervous about coming in because of the fire, but that was much closer to the event. We're not worried now," said Atkin.
Weeks after the incident, repairs are moving forward.
A crane arrived on McDowell Street and by Thursday afternoon, crews started hauling away charred equipment from the roof, where the fire started.
"It's momentous for us," said Raleigh Convention Center Executive Director Kerry Painter.
ABC11 gave you a first look just last week inside the convention center.
We were among the first to enter the building after the occupancy permit was issued and were guided into the kitchen.
Tarps covered most of the area. The drywall and ceiling tiles had been removed because of damage.
The kitchen still needs to be repaired and outside the building at the nearby Red Hat Amphitheater, we were given a tour of the mobile kitchen that's soon going to be put to use.
"It is not up and running yet. We are on final inspection, we hope, today or tomorrow, and we will have it up and running by next week," said Painter.

A volleyball tournament this weekend will be the first large event. The competition is bringing 250 boys and girls teams across the East Coast to Raleigh.
Officials say it was an important tourism event to save following the fire.
"It's thousands of athletes and their families and siblings will all show up to watch. They'll stay in hotels, they'll eat, they'll play, they'll be excited. Some will win and they will be here all weekend," said Painter.
