Community honors fallen WakeMed officer Roger Smith with honor ride

GARNER, N.C. (WTVD) -- The community gathered in Garner on Sunday morning to honor WakeMed Public Safety Officer Roger Smith, who was shot and killed earlier this month while responding to a disturbance in a healthcare center lobby.

Friends, law enforcement officers and community members came together for an honor ride organized by Operation Firefly, a local nonprofit that supports first responders.

The event drew a wide turnout from people wanting to show support for Smith's loved ones and recognize his three decades of service.

"Roger was a friend and a colleague, and that man will live with me forever," one speaker said during the gathering.

Another colleague remembered Smith as someone who "always had a smile" and "wanted to care for people every single day."

The ride set off from Garner with an escort from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

For Operation Firefly founder Nathan Sheppard, the turnout was overwhelming.

"You take a look around, and all these people are giving up time from their day to come out and show support and appreciation for the sacrifices that our military and our first responders make," Sheppard said.

Sheppard explained that honor rides weren't part of the nonprofit's original mission, but they've become an important way to uplift first responders who often carry heavy emotional burdens.

"If you look at their calls over a given month, they probably see things we couldn't even begin to dream of," he said. "Really, it's just lifting them up and showing that this community does support them, and we appreciate them."

For those who knew Smith, seeing so many people gather meant everything.

"I just really appreciate everyone coming out," one speaker told the crowd. "This is a fantastic turnout, and we've done Roger proud."

Smith, 59, was a longtime law enforcement veteran remembered for his dedication, compassion and service.

Benji Martin Jr., 29, of Garner, has been charged with murder in connection with Smith's death.
