CARY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Tens of thousands of players, coaches and soccer fans are pouring into Cary this week as The Soccer Tournament (TST) returns to WakeMed Soccer Park, bringing a major economic boost to the Triangle.
Event organizers and local leaders say the growing tournament is expected to generate over $10 million for the regional economy this year.
According to the Cary Chamber of Commerce, much of that impact is felt by small businesses, as visitors fill hotels, dine out and shop throughout the area. Last year, TST generated about $14 million in economic impact -- the largest of any event hosted in Cary.
For some vendors, this year marks their first time taking part in the event, and an opportunity to reach a broader audience.
"Anytime you see stuff like this, you want to see that local community touch. You don't want everything going to major vendors," said David Mitchell, head chef at Longleaf Swine. "So this is our first time. It's kind of new to us as well to see what the impact will be for our weekly numbers. But we're really excited about it and looking forward to giving people some great pulled pork."
Town leaders expect between 50,000 and 70,000 visitors to come through Cary over the course of the tournament, with attendees traveling from across the country and around the world. Organizers say the event has grown into a global attraction, offering international exposure for businesses both large and small.
The event lasts until June 1.
