Speed, wet road cited as factors in I-40 crash that killed Chapel Hill woman

PENDER COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said speed and wet conditions likely played a role in a crash that killed a Chapel Hill woman.

The crash happened Thursday on Interstate 40 between exits 390 and 398 in Pender County.

State troopers said 25-year-old Rebecca Claire Rains lost control of her Honda Accord, crossed the median after overcorrecting, and hit a tractor-trailer head-on.

The semi driver, a 61-year-old man from Murfreesboro, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Pender Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Heavy rain was falling at the time of the crash.
