CARY, N.C. (WTVD) -- A community in Cary is in mourning after a 15-year-old sophomore at Green Hope High School was killed in a car crash. The driver, also a teenager, is facing charges.

ABC11 spoke with friends of Lena Goff, as they remembered a life gone too soon.

Outside the crash site at Louis Stephens Drive and Morrisville Parkway on Sunday, heartbroken friends remembered Lena.

Ava Carter said she was in shock to learn that her friend had been in a car crash.

The wreck happened around 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The driver of a green Honda Civic failed to yield while making a left turn onto Louis Stephens Drive from Morrisville Parkway, colliding with a blue Jeep Cherokee.

A teenage passenger in the Honda sustained serious injuries and later died at the hospital. Cary Police would not release the name of the victim, but family and friends confirmed it was Lena.

"And I had just been with her the night before," Ava said. "And I didn't really believe it at first because I was like she was just like, here earlier."

There were five teenagers in the Honda at the time of the crash, including the driver. All were taken to the hospital, and one remained hospitalized as of Sunday afternoon.

Ava said it wasn't until she rushed to Lena's mom's house that she learned what happened.

"I told her how sorry I was for her and just how sweet Lena was, because Lena is one of the brightest souls I've ever met," Ava told ABC11. "She was such a sweet girl, and she absolutely never failed to put a smile on anyone's face, no matter what room she walked in."

The driver of the Honda, whose name was not released by Cary Police, was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to yield the right of way.

The driver of the Jeep was not injured.

Green Hope High School said it will provide grief resources as students deal with the unthinkable loss.

"And I just want everyone to know that she is such a great person and she will forever ever be missed," Ava said.
