Train hits and kills pedestrian in Smithfield

SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WTVD) -- A person was hit and killed by a train on Sunday afternoon in Smithfield.

The incident happened at 12:38 p.m. near S 9th Street and E Johnston Street.

The person died at the scene. The identity of the pedestrian has not been released.

No one on the CSX freight train was injured.

"CSX appreciates the swift response of the local first responders," a spokesperson told ABC11.

Smithfield Police continue to investigate.
