Icy and dangerous road conditions greet drivers

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Drivers should be careful on the roads as they head out the door Monday morning. MLK Jr. Day starts with concerns for slick roads due to Sunday's rain/snow and temps in the 20s.

Highs will be in the 40s. A dry cold front will move through the area later in the day. Temperatures will plummet overnight back into the upper teens and lower 20s across central North Carolina and the Sandhills.

Tuesday - High pressure will quickly build over the region behind the front, fostering abundant sunshine. With that extra boost of cold air, highs will top out near 40, nearly 15 degrees below the historical average.

Despite the unseasonably cold air, we won't be anywhere close to record levels with the coldest record highs sitting in the mid-20s and lows in the single digits.

Looking Ahead

Wednesday - Mostly sunny skies and temperatures below average.
Thursday - Rising heights will foster warmer weather with highs in the mid/upper 50s.
Friday - Below the historical average once again, and we will be keeping a close eye on an incoming storm.

Weekend

The ABC11 Weather Team is tracking another potential winter weather. The area could experience a repeat of last Sunday, with another round of rain, ice, and snow mix. Just how much will be determined by several factors, including the strength of an incoming trough, high pressure over the Midwest, and moisture influx from the Gulf.

One thing is for certain: Cold air will be abundant with a new push of arctic air.
