Body found in Sampson County ditch

CLINTON, N.C. (WTVD) -- Authorities in Sampson County are investigating after a body was found in a ditch in the 200 block of Lakewood School Road near Salemburg Tuesday afternoon.

Deputies found 49-year-old Joseph Fitzgerald Williams dead.

Authorities are investigating a possible connection to a burglary that occurred around 1 a.m. Tuesday on the same street.

The homeowner found an intruder in their living room and fired at the intruder, but the homeowner did not think he hit him.

The intruder fled on foot, but the homeowner did not see the direction of travel.

The investigation continues.
