Sanford man charged with murder after fight escalates

SANFORD (WTVD) -- A struggle over a gun left one man dead and another man in custody.

Lee County authorities charged Jason Vann Wayne Godfrey with murder after the incident in the 800 block of McPherson Road in Lee County.

When deputies got to the house, they found Cody Lee Wilder dead.

Deputies say a fight escalated and Godfrey got a pistol. The men struggled and the gun went off, killing Wilder, deputies say.

Wilder suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest. EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.

Godfrey, 34, is being held in the Lee County Jail with no bond.
