DURHAM (WTVD) -- Durham police responded to reports of heavy gunfire in the woods behind an apartment complex on Sunday.

It happened in the woods behind The Bridges apartment complex off of Highway 751 and Highway 54.

Residents of the neighboring apartments called 911 when they heard the gunfire. They told our crew on the scene they were worried the bullets would hit the buildings or the children playing outside.

Police apprehended four men who were allegedly target practicing in the woods. Officials said the apartments were not a target.

The men were shooting on federal property. No one was injured.

Our crew on the scene said the men had multiple rifles and a handgun with them.

Highway 751 was closed between Highway 54 and I-40 while police investigated the scene. The roads have since reopened.

It is not yet known what charges these men are facing.
