Award to honor former UNC coach Dean Smith

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) -- The United States Basketball Writers Association of America announced a new national award Wednesday to honor former UNC Head Basketball Coach Dean Smith.

The award will be presented to an individual who embodies the spirit and values Smith represented.

The organization said it will announce the first recipient later this year.

Smith, who coached North Carolina to two men's basketball national titles, died in February at the age of 83.
