Dean Smith, who coached North Carolina to two men's basketball national titles, died Saturday night at the age of 83.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) -- Hundreds of people gathered Thursday afternoon for private funeral services for Dean Smith at Binkley Baptist Church in Chapel Hill.

The 90-minute ceremony was open to family and close friends.

Among those who attended were UNC Basketball Coach Roy Williams and Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski. They were there along with some of the basketball greats and former Tar Heel players like Michael Jordan, Sam Perkins, Eric Montross, Rasheed Wallace, Larry Brown, Brad Daugherty, and a slew of others.

The church's parking lot was so full that cars overflowed into the grass and lined the streets of the shopping center next door.

Dean Smith was 83 when he died.

A public memorial to celebrate the life of Smith is set for Sunday, Feb. 22 at the Smith Center.

Anyone who wants to attend is invited.

It starts at 2 p.m. We will have live coverage of the event on ABC11 and ABC11.com.
