LEE COUNTY, NC (WTVD) -- A serious accident involving five vehicles clogged traffic on US-1 North in Lee County Tuesday morning.
It happened around 5:37 a.m. just north of Colon Road/Exit 74.
Evan Lavely, 25, was driving his 2005 Ford pickup north on US-1 when he struck a 2004 Nissan, driven by Emersson Molinadiaz, 37, of Sanford.
Molinadiaz then struck a 2003 Nissan, driven by 43-year-old Pedro Melendez, of Sanford. Melendez's car spun around in the roadway and came to rest in the northbound travel lane, facing south.
About one minute later, a 2004 Volkswagen traveling north on US-1 didn't reduce speed and struck Melendez head-on. The driver of the Volkswagen was not identified and was taken to Central Carolina Hospital.
Melendez was taken to UNC-Hospitals in Chapel Hill by helicopter with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
Molinadiaz was taken to Central Carolina Hospital with minor injuries.
Charges are pending.
