RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- As the Carolina Hurricanes compete in the Stanley Cup Final, local economic development officials say the team's postseason success is providing a significant boost to the Triangle economy and raising the region's profile on a global stage.

In addition to generating revenue through hockey-related tourism and hospitality, the Hurricanes' playoff run has helped showcase the Triangle as a destination for sports and major events, according to local officials.

"The Stanley Cup, you know, as the championship for the NHL and for hockey, provides a platform for this community to really show out," said Michael Haley, executive director of Wake County Economic Development. "And it's exciting for us as economic developers to be able to use that as we're talking to businesses and consultants and others that are really interest in our community because it's a point of reference that a lot of people understand."

Officials said the timing of the Stanley Cup Final, coming shortly after TST, has provided another opportunity to highlight the Triangle's sports tourism industry and its ability to host high-profile events.
Economic leaders say the increased visibility created by major sporting events can support future tourism, business investment and regional partnerships.
