Strong storms brought gusty winds, widespread damage to Central North Carolina

Woman trapped by tree that fell during severe weather
The woman was freed and taken to the hospital.

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Severe storms moved across central North Carolina on Sunday evening, causing widespread damage.

The storms sparked watches and warnings throughout the afternoon.

Some areas saw downed trees and powerlines caused by gusty winds both in the Triangle and Cumberland County.

In Fayetteville, a woman became trapped in her bed at home after a large tree fell through the roof.

The incident happened on Dobbins Holmes Road.

Fire crews were able to cut the tree and free the woman. She was taken to the hospital for her injuries.

The storms should move out by midnight, although some stragglers could remain through the overnight hours. Monday will be partly cloudy, warm, and humid with highs in the upper 80s.

Tuesday through Friday will be an incredible stretch of weather in August. Highs will be in the low 80s and humidity will be low.
