FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- An investigation is underway after a body was found in the Cape Fear River on Tuesday.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said a body was recovered from the river in Fayetteville.
On Thursday, the SBI said the body had been identified as Gregory Scott Wester, 51, of Fuquay-Varina.
The Harnett County Sheriff's Office said Wester was reported missing on Feb. 11. He was last seen about noon on Feb. 8 leaving his home on Old Mill Road. His vehicle was found abandoned the next day on River Bend Road near Linden, in Cumberland County.
River Bend Road is a dead-end road close to the Cape Fear River.
The sheriff's office said numerous searches were conducted for more than a month with ground personnel, K-9 officers and drones.
The body was eventually discovered by a boater. Dental records were used to positively identify Wester.
The North Carolina Medical Examiner's Office is conducting an autopsy.
The SBI and the Harnett County Sheriff's Office continue to investigate.
