Missing Cumberland County boy found safe, father sought
Cumberland County Sheriff's deputies say 29-year-old Derrick McLain kidnapped his 6-year-old son Monday evening after allegedly assaulting the boy's mother.

FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- Authorities say a child who was the subject of an Amber Alert Monday evening is now safe with his mother.

Jaylien Jo'el "Jay" McClain was allegedly taken by his father, 29-year-old Derrick Jamaal McClain, who remains on the run.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office told ABC11 that Derrick McClain and some friends followed the child's mother after she picked him up from daycare around 5 p.m. Monday.

The mother stopped and was allegedly assaulted by McClain in her car. That's when, authorities say, Derrick McClain grabbed the child.

McClain later dropped the child off at his father's home. The grandfather then contacted the child's mother, who then picked the child up.

Derrick McClain is described as a black male, 6 feet 2 inches tall, and weighing 170 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing light blue jeans.

Derrick McClain was last driving a late model silver Buick or Saturn.

He faces misdemeanor assault charges as well as property damage. More charges are expected when he is arrested.
