Police: Officer beaten inside Ohio Wal-Mart

CANTON, Ohio (AP) - Authorities say an Ohio police officer is hospitalized after being struck with a baseball bat inside a Wal-Mart store.

Canton police say 58-year-old Officer John Clark was responding to a call about a suspicious person Sunday afternoon. Lt. Roger Crihfield (KRICH'-feeld) says investigators believe the suspect picked up a baseball bat in sporting goods and waited for the officer to approach.

Crihfield says Clark was struck in the face and knocked down, then hit a second time while on the floor. Police say customers intervened to stop the attack.

The suspect was arrested about a block from the store. The charges against 23-year-old David Carter of Canton include felonious assault on a police officer.

Clark was listed in stable condition Monday.
