Legislature honors Kay Yow

RALEIGH Yow died in January at the the age 66 after a long fight with cancer. Doctors first diagnosed her with breast cancer in 1987. She had served as NC State's women's basketball coach since 1975.

The season following her dignosis, Yow coached the U.S. Olympic women's basketball team to a gold medal.

During her time at NC State, the Hall of Fame coach led the Wolfpack women to more than 700 victories.

Yow's cancer went into remission and then recurred during the 2004-2005 season, forcing her to leave her team twice in past seasons to focus on treatment even as she raised money for research and cancer awareness.
