ADELPHI, Md. (AP) - There's no new rule against porn at the University of Maryland. The Board of Regents has voted against creating a no-porn on campus policy, in defiance of the state legislature. Lawmakers wanted an anti-porn reg after a student group tried to show an X-rated movie earlier this year. The regents say such an anti-porno rule would be impossible to enforce and would lead to costly free-speech lawsuits.
WHISKEY SPILLED
GEORGETOWN, Ky. (AP) - It's enough to bring Johnny Walker to his knees or make
Jack Daniels cry. A tanker truck carrying whiskey overturned on a highway near
the Jim Beam distillery in Frankfort, Ky. The tanker was loaded with Canadian
Club. Canadian Club and Jim Beam are owned by the same parent corporation.
Officials say U.S. 460 was closed while the flammable booze was cleaned up. The
Lexington Herald-Leader reports the driver wasn't hurt. That tanker was carrying
7,000 gallons of whiskey. Officials aren't sure how much of that Canadian Club
ended up on the rocks -- or rather -- the road.
SEXY MANNEQUINS
PHOENIX (AP) - Some chesty mannequins could get a Phoenix-area used car dealer
in trouble. AutoMart owner Tracy Tingue attracts attention with a pair of
well-endowed, sign-holding dummies. He dresses them in revealing outfits from a
nearby thrift store. The Arizona Republic reports some folks in Chandler are
complaining. A city inspector says the sexy mannequins could be in violation of
Chandler's sign ordinance. The issue has been forwarded to the city prosecutor
for possible charges. Tingue says he'll fight and vows his "girls" will stay.
BUGATTI-IN A LAGOON
LA MARQUE, Texas (AP) - A Texas man as quite a story to tell to his insurance
company -- about his million-dollar Bugatti. The sports car ended up in a
saltwater lagoon near Galveston. La Marque police Lt. Greg Gilchrist says the
man blames the accident on a low-flying pelican. Gilchrist says the driver told
officers he was distracted by the bird, dropped his cell phone and veered off
the road. Gilchrist doesn't know if the Bugatti Veyron can be salvaged. But
Gilchrist notes saltwater isn't good for anything.
HOME IMPROVEMENT ROMANCE
NITRO, W.Va. (AP) - The way to a man's heart is through his -- hammer? A former
clerk at a Lowe's in West Virginia is charged with discounting tools to try to
win over a guy. Police in Nitro busted 20-year-old Katie Lynn Smith yesterday on
a fraudulent schemes charge. She's accused of under-charging for 20-grand worth
of stuff. A criminal complaint says she had rung-up a pressure washer worth
several hundred dollars for just $3.66. Authorities say the transactions were
captured on security video. According to court papers, the young woman was
giving the illegal discounts to -- quote -- "a male she desired as a boyfriend."
No word, tough, if she got her guy.
CATERPILLARS IN SPACE
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - These bugs have the right stuff. Three monarch
caterpillars are about to become insect astronauts. University of Kansas prof
Chip Taylor is providing the caterpillars for a space shuttle launch planned for
Monday. The Wichita Eagle reports the bugs will ride the shuttle Atlantis to the
International Space Station. Taylor says school kids will be watching their own
caterpillars develop in their classrooms and compare them to the orbiting
caterpillars. He figures the space 'pillars will turn into butterflies sometime
after Thanksgiving.
