Jessie Rae Scott remembered at funeral service

MEBANE

Scott died Sunday after suffering injuries in a fall earlier this year.

Hundreds of people filled Hawfields Presbyterian Church to say goodbye to the mother of five and widow of former Governor Bob Scott.

During the funeral service, friends and family told stories about Jessie Rae Scott.

Scott’s grandson Andrew Cagle shared a photo with his grandmother’s writing on the back. Cagle read aloud, “I suppose this picture is the two things I’m fighting for. You and liberty, at the moment as always you have my attention. You can see what is closest to me and granddaddy standing beside the grandmommy and the Statue of Liberty.”

Scott’s grave marker is engraved with mentions of her time as North Carolina’s first lady, but there was a specific focus on her being the wife of Robert Scott, daughter of Albert and Rosa Lee Osbourne, and the mother of Mary, Meg, Susan, Kerr, and Jan.

Jessie Rae Scott was 81. Her husband died in January of 2009.
